Specialising in Software Development

Hi, I'm Carson, a second-year Software Engineering student at the University of Auckland who likes building things that actually get used.

The projects I am most proud of have come out of Project Magma, a student club I now lead as President, where we build real software for non-profits instead of just theoretical assignments. One of my favourites is a web-scraping and automation tool I built for Communities Against Alcohol Harm. There's something fulfilling about writing code that meaningfully makes someone's job easier in the background, especially when they are working towards better communities for everyone

I've also worked with the Web Development Consultation Club (WDCC), building a TypeScript/React site for the UoA Motorsport club as part of a nine-person dev team, and I help out as the unofficial "IT guy" for my family's business, May's Autohaus, where I built and maintain their customer database and website.

Outside of code, I'm training toward a marathon, which has taught me more about pacing, patience, and not panicking when things go wrong than I expected it to. I also work part time in a supermarket, which has its own way of teaching you to stay calm under pressure and talk to absolutely anyone.

I care about writing code that's clean and actually solves a real problem for the person using it, whether it's hand-written or AI-assisted, the standard doesn't change. Right now I'm looking for a software engineering internship where I can keep building on the theory with real-world practice.

SOFTENG281: Object Oriented Programming Learn fundamental object-oriented programming concepts using Java, including classes, inheritance, polymorphism, encapsulation, interfaces, and design patterns. The course emphasizes writing clean, modular, and reusable code to solve real-world problems.

SOFTENG282: Software Engineering Theory SOFTENG282 delves into the theoretical foundations of software engineering, including topics such as formal languages, automata theory, and the design and analysis of algorithms. The course emphasizes logical reasoning and mathematical techniques to understand and solve complex software engineering problems.

COMPSYS201: Fundamentals of Computer Engineering This course provides an overview of how computers work, from low-level logic to high-level software programming. Students gain introductory skills in designing simple digital systems using Boolean algebra and finite state machines, and implement these designs using Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). The course also covers the features and programming of the Microchip ATmega328P microcontroller using the C programming language.

ENGSCI211: Mathematical Modelling 2 ENGSCI211 is a core course for all engineering students, covering a range of mathematical and modeling topics applicable across all branches of engineering. Topics include ordinary differential equations, multivariable calculus, linear algebra, Fourier series, and introductory data analysis and statistics. The course emphasizes applying mathematical techniques to solve engineering problems.

SOFTENG284: Data Structures and Algorithms SOFTENG284 introduces essential data structures (such as arrays, linked lists, trees, and graphs) and fundamental algorithms (including sorting, searching, and graph traversal). The course focuses on algorithm efficiency, complexity analysis, and practical implementation, providing students with the tools to solve computational problems effectively.

SOFTENG283: Software Quality Assurance SOFTENG283 focuses on ensuring software quality through various methodologies and tools. Students learn about testing strategies, debugging techniques, code reviews, and automated testing frameworks. The course emphasizes delivering robust, error-free software by applying quality assurance practices throughout the development lifecycle.

SOFTENG206: Software Engineering Design 1 SOFTENG206 introduces students to systematic software development practices. The course covers skills and tools for software design, including testing, version control, and build systems. Emphasis is placed on collaborative development, ensuring students are well-prepared for real-world software engineering projects.

ENGGEN204: Professional Skills, Communication, and Collaboration ENGGEN204 focuses on developing essential professional skills, with a strong emphasis on effective communication and collaboration. Students engage in group work, learning about teamwork, problem analysis, and presentation skills. The course aims to equip students with the interpersonal skills necessary for success in engineering and professional environments.

SOFTENG370: Operating Systems This course explores the inner workings of modern operating systems and bridges the gap between high-level software and low-level hardware. The curriculum focuses heavily on process management, concurrency control, CPU scheduling, and virtual memory management. Through practical system-level programming, the paper builds a strong understanding of how applications interact with hardware resources. This knowledge provides a vital foundation for writing optimized, resource-efficient backend systems and managing complex, multithreaded software applications.

SOFTENG351: Databases Focused on the design, implementation, and optimization of enterprise data systems, this paper covers both relational and non-relational database management architectures. Key topics include schema normalization, advanced SQL query optimization, indexing, and the enforcement of ACID properties during transaction management. The coursework builds the practical skills needed to architect scalable data models and write high-performance queries. Ultimately, it ensures a strong capability to maintain data integrity and performance in large-scale applications.

COMPSCI373: Grapics and Image Processing This paper delivers a comprehensive introduction to the mathematical foundations of 2D and 3D computer graphics alongside digital image processing techniques. The syllabus covers essential concepts like coordinate transformations, illumination models, rendering pipelines, and digital filtering algorithms for edge detection. By blending spatial mathematics with practical programming, the course builds a versatile skill set. These proficiencies apply directly to fields such as computer vision, user interface rendering pipelines, and interactive visual computing.

ENGGEN303: Business communication Designed to prepare engineers for professional and entrepreneurial environments, this paper emphasizes the critical communication skills required in the tech industry. The course explores technical report writing, professional presentations, intellectual property, and business case analysis for engineering projects. It also places a heavy emphasis on team dynamics and agile collaboration methods. This paper highlights the essential skills needed to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders and manage projects effectively.
